Street food here is not a fallback — it is a tradition with its own timetable, where each dish belongs to a particular hour.

Morning: simit and tea

Red carts stacked with sesame bread rings stand outside every metro exit. Take the simit warm, the tea in a small tulip glass, and eat standing up while the street wakes around you. No cheaper start to a day exists.

Midday: balık ekmek at Eminönü

Mackerel is grilled at the waterfront and pushed into half a loaf with onion and parsley. Lemon is not optional; a glass of şalgam is. It has to be eaten standing at the water’s edge, or it becomes something else.

The waterfront is a ten-minute walk from the hotel.

Afternoon: kumpir and stuffed mussels

Ortaköy’s kumpir is a baked potato mashed with butter and cheese, then loaded with a dozen toppings. One is comfortably enough for two people.

Stuffed mussels are sold nearly everywhere; choose a stall with a queue and visible restocking. Lemon goes straight into the shell, the mussel goes down in one, and the bill is counted from the empty shells in front of you.

Late: kokoreç and dürüm

After a long evening walk, kokoreç and dürüm take over. In Kadıköy and Beyoğlu these places run until morning and are never empty.

Sweet, at any hour

Baklava, lokma, kazandibi; in winter, roasted chestnuts and boza. Good baklava is recognised by its crispness rather than its sweetness — if it is soaked through with syrup, you are at the wrong counter.

Where to walk

Eminönü, Karaköy and Kadıköy hold the densest street food. A short route runs from the Spice Bazaar down to the water, and there are more stalls on it than anyone can manage in a single pass.

But the rule is simple

Go where people are standing. A queue at a counter in Istanbul is the most reliable review that exists.

See what is nearby on our Explore page, or find dining options under Restaurant.

You can build a full day in Istanbul out of food without once sitting down at a table.
