Istanbul is bigger than most visitors expect. It sits on two continents, holds more than fifteen million people, and rarely behaves the way a guidebook suggests. A little preparation turns that first day from confusing into easy, and most of it comes down to four things: how you move, how you pay, how you behave, and where you begin.<\/p>\n
Buy an Istanbulkart on your first day. One rechargeable card covers trams, metro lines, buses, ferries and funiculars, and it costs noticeably less than single tickets. Around the old city, the T1 tram line does most of the work.<\/p>\n
If you take a taxi, make sure the meter is running. Booking through BiTaksi or Uber settles the question before it comes up.<\/p>\n
The currency is the Turkish lira. Cards work almost everywhere, but street vendors, tea houses and small markets still run on cash. ATMs are easy to find; just keep an eye on exchange rates and withdrawal fees.<\/p>\n
Istanbul stays affordable when you eat where locals eat and use public transport rather than taxis.<\/p>\n
Mosques ask for modest clothing, covered heads for women, and shoes removed at the door. Visits pause during prayer times \u2014 that is a twenty-minute wait, not a closed door.<\/p>\n
A few words of Turkish go further than you would expect. Merhaba<\/em> and te\u015fekk\u00fcr ederim<\/em> are usually enough to change the tone of a conversation.<\/p>\n Hagia Sophia is the obvious opening: the centuries it spent as a church, a mosque and a museum are still readable on its walls. The Blue Mosque<\/a> and Topkapi Palace sit within a few minutes’ walk, with Sultanahmet Square<\/a> in between as a natural place to pause.<\/p>\n For shopping, the Grand Bazaar<\/a> and the Spice Bazaar<\/a> are both within reach on foot. In the late afternoon, walk down to Emin\u00f6n\u00fc and take a ferry across \u2014 twenty minutes on the water explains the city better than any guided tour.<\/p>\n A first visit is rarely a last one.
