Galataport is the reworked cruise terminal on the Bosphorus shore between Karakoy and Tophane. The terminal itself is underground, which leaves a kilometre and a half of open waterfront that was closed to the public for a century.
Along it are shops, restaurants and the Istanbul Modern art museum in its new building. The promenade is level, wide and free to walk, and the view runs from the Galata Bridge across to the Asian shore.
It is at its best in the late afternoon, when the light turns and the ferries cross in front of you. From Hotel Sultania it is a tram ride to Tophane or a walk of about twenty-five minutes over Galata Bridge.
